With the arrival of the New Year, I’ve been relishing in the sense of cleanliness and expansiveness that comes with putting away the Christmas decor, decluttering, and larger-than-normal garbage pick-ups.
This week, my music choices shifted from soulful Christmas tunes to Reggae (because I live in Florida and drive a Jeep and it’s just what feels right much of the time!). I’ve created space physically, mentally, and emotionally, setting goals for things to achieve as they come to mind. I’ve been gentle with myself, not forcing new year intentions or action steps, but rather letting them come to me as they will, noticing them, and writing them down.
What have I found with this approach? I’m at ease and in flow, not sitting with a journal for 2 hours, anxiously trying to write down every intention, as if I will never get another chance to figure it all out.
I’ve supported clients with getting “back on track” after the holidays, while simultaneously doing the same myself. I’ve begun taking action towards my intentions for 2025, while also making space for rest and nurturance.
A couple days ago, I took my computer out to my patio to work for a bit. The sun was hitting at just the right angle, providing just enough warmth on an otherwise chilly day. I didn’t even open my computer. I curled up on the bench beneath the comfort of a blanket and slept…for 2 hours. A very deep, restful sleep that I hadn’t even realized I needed. I didn’t beat myself up for sleeping instead of working. I had given myself what I needed - fresh air, sunshine, and rest. I went inside, cooked up a simple, nourishing white bean and kale soup for my family which we enjoyed with a nice glass of white wine, and went to bed early that night for another deep sleep.
The start of a new year often comes with a rush to make a strong beginning in January. Yet, I urge you to draw inspiration from the natural world. What does nature do during this season? It's winter—a period of stillness, recuperation, and subtle transformation. This quiet and repose are not signs of inactivity; rather, they provide the opportunity for thoughtful planning, in-depth learning, creativity, and introspection. If nature takes this time to rest, perhaps we should too. We've mistakenly come to associate rest with laziness, but in truth, rest is a fertile time. It's during these quieter moments that we lay the groundwork for future growth, plant the seeds for upcoming projects, foster relationships, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Rest sets the stage for the evolution and renewal that spring will bring.
As we embrace this time of reflection and renewal, it's crucial to clarify our intentions, establish actionable steps, and start moving forward. This period also calls for clearing away mental, emotional, and physical clutter to create room for new growth. If you're ready to take this journey of rejuvenation, I invite you to join our 5-Day New Year Reset.
